To Perm Or Not To Perm? Why Corkscrew Curls Are The Hairstyle To Have RN

Perms are officially back, but is it all still too 80s, or are corkscrew curls the way forward?

Corkscrew curls have a habit of conjuring two images.

Numero uno: That bad perm our mum got in the 80s.

Numero dos: The iconic Princess Diaries scene where she exclaims, 'I look like a poodle'.

All in all, we've never really drifted off to a corkscrew curls fantasy, preferring instead to frazzle the living daylights out of them with a set of GHDs.

So, you can imagine our surprise when we slowly, but surely started to see the return of tight corkscrew curls and, dare we say it, perms. And the even greater surprise when we didn't hate it.

It all started during the SS17 show season, when fashion houses like Gucci and Altuzarra started showcasing all kinds of curly, crispy, ringletty goodness.

But we also have the Hadid sisters to thank for this, as they're all over this hairstyle and naturally, made it look incredible.

About a week ago, Bella uploaded a saucy snap of her dark black locks looking very curly whirly, wearing a tight black body and matching black boots. Fair to say, it looked FIERCE (and all kinds of Sandy from Grease cool).

A few days later Gigi seemingly copied her little sis, giving off major 80s Madonna vibes with her hair tied up in a bow.

Serious trend alert status. We quickly delved into more research, (*cough* Instagram stalking) and after a few scrolls we were thoroughly obsessed.

Not only do the wild tresses give you 'I woke up like this' vibes that even Beyoncé would be proud of. The retro curls finally give us a 80s look we can actually werk this season.

It looks sexy, playful, effortless and even magical if you have pastel coloured hair. So, letting your hair run wild seems like a no brainer right now. Volume? Check. Wow-factor? Check. No bad hair days ever again? Check.

But how do you make a perm not look like you stepped straight out of the actual 80s?

It's all about going for a modern, loose wave because (and this shocked us too), getting a perm doesn't mean you have to get super tight, frizzy curls.

These days, it's all about adding subtle bends and twists so your hair looks naturally wavy all the time, without having to spend hours using a curling tong. Sounds good to us.

What to ask for? Basically the larger the perming rod, the looser the wave, so if you're feeling the corkscrew curls as seen above and want a more permanent finish, go for a smaller rod perm. Fancy a 'just woke up like this' wave? A larger rod is what you need to ask for.

Just look to Julianne Hough who made headlines when she got her own 'natural wave' perm by hairstylist to the stars Riawna Capri.

Basically, if you've got naturally super straight hair that refuses to keep a wave in, the modern perm is a godsend.

You can thank us later.
