On the cover Dakota is wearing Lancome’s L'Absolu Rouge in Rouge Odyssée, £21, a hydrating lipstick that’s a really punchy red. If you want the matte effect seen on the ELLE cover, apply the lipstick with a brush, blot with tissue, apply the colour again and then hold the tissue up against your lips and lightly dust transparent powder onto your lips through the tissue to take down any shine.
With red lipstick, however, it’s always about finding the shade that suits you best. Head to your nearest beauty hall and try brands like Laura Mercier, Giorgio Armani and Clarins. Try on a few different types of red, some with orange undertones and others with blue (the assistant should be able to pick out a selection for you to try) you’ll soon be able to see which shades suit you best as they will light up your face and make you look fresher. If a shade simply highlights your skin’s flaws it’s not for you.
If you’re not sure you’ll warm to red lippy don’t spend too much at first, instead try a more affordable brand. See the £1 red lipstick I love here…
