I'm reporting from New York Fashion Week, where I have backstage access to the shows, the models, the hair and make up looks, the artists, and yes, the food. Here are my highlights from day one. In a nutshell: It's all about the prep.

The weather is: As cold as I've ever experienced. It is -11 degrees in the daytime, which means my careful packing was redundant and I had to dash to the shops between appointments for thermals, appropriate footwear and more jumpers. It is dificult to maintain any kind of style in this kind of weather.

I wore: Joseph leather leggings (lost all feeling), ASOS cape jumper (lacking sleeves - lets the bitter wind in), battered Converse (only shoes I packed that won't give me frostbite), 3.1 Phillip Lim clutch, cashmere hat, gloves and scarf (ESSENTIAL).

I saw: Diane Kendal prepping the look for Jason Wu before any models arrived - the inspiration was Charlotte Rampling. 'Real, fresh, very consumer friendly,' as she described it.

I ate: The amazing array of food backstage at Wu, which included apple rings with granola and a full cheese board.

I tried: The newly opened Serge Normant for John Frieda salon in Chelsea. It was as good a blowdry as I've ever had from Stephanie, a big fan of Serge himself, which you could see in the great styling.

I loved: The artwork in the salon by Donald 'Drawbertson' Robertson.

#FirstLook product: The Jason Wu Lancôme palette - perfect fresh glow neutrals. Out in July.
