Pat McGrath is one of, if not the most, powerful and imaginative make-up artists in the business. Creating so many iconic and beautiful looks for campaigns and catwalk we have to admit we always feel a little starstruck in Pat McGrath's presence. Luckily we managed to grab 5 minutes to talk to her amidst the (surprisingly calm in mood but very busy) backstage area in Milan's Dolce & Gabbana headquarters...

Tell us about the Dolce & Gabbana AW13 look…

'Dolce and Gabbana's owners Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were really inspired by the cathedrals in the town of Monreale, Sicily. The amazing mosaics and the rich colours. They wanted the girls to look aristocratic, a little bit couture and very sophisticated. So I chose a winged eye, matte red lip and perfect brows to give a nod to the iconic Italian actress Sophia Loren. Even though it looks like she has lots of make-up on it's still very simple - nude eyes, a sleek eyeliner wing, intensified mascara on the lashes, eyebrows groomed to perfection and lips made with Dolce & Gabbana Ruby Lip Pencil and a mix of Dolce & Gabbana Lipsticks in Ultra and Amethyst for that beautiful burgundy mouth. To create that flawless natural skin finish I used Dolce & Gabbana new Matte Foundation and Perfect Matte Concealer which gives great coverage whilst being really light on the skin.'

What do you love about Milan culture?

'Pasta! I love the food. I love coming back to see my team. I love shopping the great shopping. And I really love my hotel room at the Principe.'

Biggest trend for AW13?

'I don't know right now but I am definitely seeing something with that matte lip. It gives lips strength but not too much weight'.

We've seen a lot of glossy skin and eyes so far. How do you make the 'gloss' trend wearable?

'Stick to using gloss on the eyes, it's much more wearable than glossy skin. On the runway and with the new HD you can't wear glossy skin, it just wouldn't look right, you have to control the skin a little more and the same goes for real life and pictures.'

Do you have a favourite era in that inspires you?

'Always the hollywood period. Anything to do with old Hollywood. I think of a lip, a wing and a beautiful brow. I love all the classic looks from Rita Hayworth to Dorothy Dandridge and Marilyn Monroe.'
