Drew Barrymore earned an office oooh for her pretty plait, while I can personally vouch for the fact Liv Tyler’s side-swept fringe and glossy, mid-length hair were very adorable indeed.

We were both in Paris for Givenchy's 10th Anniversary of make-up creation by Nicolas Degennes at Le Palais de Tokyo, where I got the full measure of Liv’s locks – thick, swingy, rich and shiny. I think you have to be born with it. On the other hand, the cute, eyebrow-skimming fringe she draws variously across her forehead or back off her face is an example of style versatility we can all subscribe to.

While I wasn’t lucky enough to get up close and personal with Drew, I have been able to procure first-hand tips on how to achieve that very useful braided, up-do from celebrity hairstylist and Kerastase Ambassador George Northwood. ‘Up-dos are very, very big at the moment,’ he agreed. ‘This one’s particularly flattering because it adds some height and width, and the side parting keeps it soft and chic.’

The key, George says, is to work through plenty of mousse before rough-drying to give your hair guts. ‘If you’ve got fine hair, a little back-combing at the roots will give it extra oomph and help the style stick. Start from a side parting and french-plait across your crown and down the side of your head, taking a piece of hair each time. Don’t worry about it looking too perfect,’ he adds. ‘This hairstyle looks fresh and modern precisely because it’s not too neat. When you get to the back, incorporate the rest of your hair and form a twist, knot or casual bun before securing with pins.’

‘It’s worth perfecting one or two you can do again and again,’ says George as a final word on up-dos. ‘But you still want to vary them a little each time.’
