Glossy New York ladies, watch out—we just spent an hour with Olivia Palermo’s hair stylist.

Olivia Palermo personifies the polished style that leaps to mind when we think about New York. So who better to send us off into New York Fashion Week than Andre Davis, Palermo’s favourite hair stylist?

Davis, a celebrity stylist who also looks after Rosario Dawson, Jane Krakowski and other stars, met Palermo on a photo shoot before she appeared in The City. Since then, she’s kept a bimonthly appointment for blowouts and treatments.

‘Even before she was famous, she had an obsession with keeping her hair impeccable,’ Davis said. ‘She keeps her hair on a schedule.’

That schedule includes trims every eight weeks and regular Julien Farel Restore treatments, to ‘bring hair back to its natural state.’

Despite possessing irascible, curly hair that no one sane could ever compare to The Real Olivia P’s tresses, I was curious to see if a blow-out could make me over into a glossy New Yorker in time for my first fashion show. After all, ‘In New York, everybody is looking at everybody,’ Davis said. ‘It’s competitive out there. Nobody wants to be outdone, so your hair has got to be dead-on.’

The key to Davis’s confident blow-dry technique is brushing the hair forward, over the face, to lift the roots and preserve volume. ‘It helps the hair have a really uncontrived movement. It shouldn't look that “done.”’ That may be, but half an hour later, I looked more like Cousin It than Palermo.

And then Davis brushed the hair backward off my face, and I saw this. It had been five years since my last straightening blow-dry, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never looked like this before. My hair was so long, so bouncy, so swishy, that I couldn’t help but walk away smiling. All day, I felt I was in disguise as someone altogether more glamorous. Someone, perhaps, with the initials O.P…
