By 2018 it is predicted there will be no honeybees in Britain, while three species of bumblebee are already extinct. Without bees there would, obviously, be no honey or wax; but surprisingly around a third of the products we buy in the supermarket rely on pollination - fruit, cotton, chocolate, coffee, meat and dairy, to name a few! A threat to the bees is essentially a threat to us and it’s not a distant problem.

So what’s causing their decline? The pesticide Neonicotinoid used in farming is killing off the bees (which means it’s probably not all that great for us either!); it is 7000 times more toxic than DDT a pesticide banned here in 1984.

Enter Neal’s Yard Remedies who have set up an online petition calling on the British government to ban Neonicotinoid, it will be delivered to the Houses of Parliament following a protest march in October – which is sure to cause a buzz (sorry, couldn’t help it).

Visit Neal’s Yard Remedies website to sign the petition, find out more about the cause and which bee-friendly organisations it is working with.
