I'd rather you didn't burn yourself while soaking up the seasonal (yet surprising) sun rays. But if your complexion has taken a battering and you're resembling a tomato today then you need some after sun, stat!

I've just returned from holiday and while I did go a bit pink in places I haven't been in pain or peeled once, which I put down to the trio of after sun lotions I packed for my travels. The best sunburn healer is a heavy dose of hydration, after all.

First I packed Kiehl's Creme de Corps, £44. Technically it isn't an after sun, but it's seriously hydrating thanks to the cocoa butter and sesame oil. It also doesn't have any shimmer to it, which means that it's boy friendly too, so you don't need to pack separate products.

Next up, Institut Esthederm Photo Cellular Care Refreshing After-Sun Fondant, £29.70 (at Feelunique.com), contains sesame oil, amino acids and menthol to cool and hydrate. It's shot through with a subtle mother of pearl shimmer that leaves tanned skin beautifully sheeny.

Last but not least, you can't beat Nivea on value. At £6.49 a bottle you can happily slather on this Moisturising After Sun Lotion. Containing aloe vera and avocado oil it’s seriously soothing for overheated skin. (Boots.com)
