Hats off...to your hair

The cold snap means a hat is essential right now. But while they are great at keeping you warm, they're not so great for a freshly blow-dried hairstyle; you're likely to end up with flat, lifeless hair and if you're anything like me a little bit of matting too - nice. So I called up Jonathan Long, co-founder of the Lockonego salon, to give me his hat-hair busting tips...

'Avoid opting for super-smooth hair because it will never stay that way under a hat', explains Jonathan. Instead, embrace volume. 'When you take off your hat, flip your hair upside down and with your fingertips, run your fingers and thumbs over the scalp in small circular motions for full, volumised hair.'

For a quick hairstyle, that will work for parties (there's plenty happening at the minute) Jonathan recommends a classic ponytail which are, luckily, bang on trend. 'Fix hat hair by gently backcombing the roots before tying the hair back into a high ponytail, this will add some instant glamour to a classic look. Always carry a tail comb in your handbag.'

If all else fails go to the professionals. ‘Invest in a Keratin treatment so that the hair cuticle is nice and smooth, at least your hair will be less frizzy when you take off your hat. Currently at Lockonego we are offering one free Keratin treatment when you and a friend both book in - it’s a must for winter'.
