Trial A Trend: The Two Tone lip

By Sophie Beresiner

OK, my turn to take my London Fashion Week trend trial to the streets. This time, the Two Tone Lip, as seen most notably at Paul Smith and Holly Fulton. I quite coveted this look a couple of seasons back when it was block colour-clashing upper and lower lips. For London now it's a blended ombre effect, with a darker centre bleeding into a light outline. I very much like this look on the catwalk. I am experienced enough a lipstick wearer to know that it may not wear so easily in real life...

My choices are fluoro pink and autumn/winter appropriate deep red. Both colours I love seperately. First I layer Mac Viva Glam Lipstick in Nicki over a nude lipliner for staying power. Bright, punchy, amazing. Then I dab YSL Rouge Pur Couture in 204 in the middle only, and blend out with my finger. Hmm, muted both shades and a little fashion forward perhaps?

Me: 'Team, do I look like a clown? I have to go to the Burberry show, tell me honestly.'

Team: 'No it looks cool, I really like it etc. etc.'

So I take the look with me to accost Cara Delevigne backstage and then front of house to watch the show, all the while a bit conscious I look like I had too much red wine at lunch time. I even got street-style-snapped for ELLE.com, so I hope it looked better than it felt.

By the time I got back to the office the whole lot had blended into one - which is where the wearibility factor comes in - but it did make a soft stain that is not quite as dramatic a colour as I'd like, but I think I prefer to the catwalk look.

Verdict: Nice to look at, tricky to wear, but a cool way to personalise a lip look for a very short lifespan should the mood take you.
