His excitement at having a mini gold Chanel logo stuck to his finger tip was so infectious, I had to tell you about it.
We’re not the only ones getting all worked up about nails, though. ‘Nails are really having their moment,’ Sophy told me just now when I called her to find out the source of the Chanel appliqué. ‘I’ve always been a massive nail enthusiast, but till recently everyone just laughed at me. Now, I’m the coolest thing around! Designers always used to ask for neat, nude nails for their campaigns and shows, or even just a buff, but now they’ve started to ask, what are we going to do with the nails? They all want to do something interesting.’ (Case in point: Sophy’s recent work for the new Illamasqua campaign where she did everything from slanted tips to nail rings. Check out the pictures on her blog, www.sophyrobson.com.)
So what’s new for nails? Sophy’s tip is that gradient nails, where each nail is painted in a different colour, will be the Next Big Thing. ‘But it’s not about that tacky teenage experimental look,’ she says. ‘It’s about co-ordinating and toning the colours to give the nails a sophisticated, dynamic look – like they’re changing colour. Try it with soft lilacs and pinks, or different shades of this season’s it-colour green.’
If only the Chanel logo will do, however, you’ll thank me for twisting Sophy’s arm to reveal her source. It’s – drum-roll, please – Hollywood Star Nails in Peckham. ‘They have everything for nails under the sun,’ she told me. To apply this and other nail appliqués, just paint on a layer of clear polish, pop the appliqué in place with a pair of tweezers, leave it to set for a couple of minutes then paint over it with some top coat. Bonus: ‘It lasts much longer than a normal manicure and you don’t get chips,’ Sophy says.
