Adam decided on a plaited, almost 1960s updo which, luckily for me and you, looks better if it’s a bit rough around the edges. It’s a hairstyle with a celebrity seal of approval – Diane rocked it during her press junket for Inglorious Basterds earlier this year.

Here’s how to get it right:

1 Wash and condition your hair. If you don’t have time to wash your hair, spray the roots with Klorane dry shampoo, £6.95.

2 Apply Shu Uemura Tasai Cream, £21.50, to your towel dried hair to add body.

3 Blowdry your hair with a barrel brush – again, this will give your hair extra volume. If your hair is fine, you’ll need to use Velcro rollers, too.

4 Pull the top layers of your hair up and out with the brush when you blow dry for even more oomph.

5 I almost never spray hairspray direct onto the hair; instead spray it onto your brush. To give you controllable hair, use a paddle brush with a big base and a deep cushion to work it in.

6 Next, take sections of your hair under the crown between your thumb and forefinger and, using a fine-toothed comb, backcomb the bottom inch of the hair nearest to the root to add height at the crown.

7 Brush the front layers of your hair back over the backcombed areas for a sleeker finish.

8 Now it’s time to create the French braid. Take a section at the side of your head and start plaiting from the top edge of the ear. Make sure the plait is chunky, if it’s too fine it won’t look soft and natural.

9 Plait all the way around the nape of your neck, following the curvature of your neck, to the opposite side. If bits fall out don’t worry – this hairstyle shouldn’t be perfect.

10 Tuck the end up and under the plait so it’s hidden. Pin in place using Boots Blending Grips. They’re matte, not varnished and slippy, so they’ll hold the hair in place.

11 Spritz hairspray onto your fingers and rub over your hair to create a lived-in look.

12. Finish with a spritz of hairspray on the end of your tail comb and run over any messy areas.

ELLE’s top tip: Invest in the Tasai Cream – I have never had so much volume in my hair before!
