Last night saw a host of stars attend the Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles. When it came to the hair, Kristen Stewart and Gwen Stefani’s side partings were the winning styles of the night.
While Lea Michele dabbled with a subtle off-centre part it was Gwen and Kristen who pushed the style to the max with the gutsy use of a strong parting, a look that paid off for both stars.
Kristen chose a luxe-grunge look that made the most of her trademark tousled tresses. What gave this look edge over Lea's beachy side-swept hair was the clever use of a simple braid pulled tight behind her ear to create a sleek section that juxtaposed nicely with the flowing tresses on the opposite side. The skinny plait sat behind her ear. It’s the perfect summer look, especially on the beach.
Get the look by spritzing your hair with Tigi Catwalk Session Series Salt Spray, £12.10 (at Feel Unique) before rough drying. If you hair isn't naturally wavy, tong random sized sections and then rake through with your fingers to create that grungy, wavy texture. Create a deep side part, then use a little wax or gel to slick back the small section of hair behind the ear before plaiting.
Gwen rocked an equally fierce look, but her hairstyle was more sculptural than textured. Super sleek and straight, the hair at the front was side parted before being swept up and off to one side. On the other side a section of hair was pulled tight to her head and secured with pins that were concealed by loose hair left at the back.
Use hairspray rather than gel to create the lift and sleek section on the side - this will prevent the hair looking greasy or wet but will ensure hold. Try L'Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Extra Strength Hairspray, £6.49 (at Boots).
This hairstyle would work well now at night with a LBD or come autumn any time. Pair it with a punchy orange lip like Gwen or if you prefer a smoky eye make sure to keep your lipstick nude.
Team ELLE can’t decide which look to attempt first, how about you?
