I've just come back from a Double Gloss blow-dry at the Lisa Shepherd salon on Mortimer St. I was booked in with Jason Cocking, the Salon Director, who has styled many celebrities including ELLE favourites Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen. The salon, which opened in March, is super slick with huge mirrors and futuristic touches, but still has a warm, friendly atmosphere. (While you wait there is a complimentary fridge full of drinks and a coffee machine at your disposal to quench your thirst). There is also a relaxation room where clients can go while waiting for their colour to develop; the room is stocked with tons of magazines, wine and ice-cream; ideal for sating boredom.

The Double Gloss blow-dry, £35, comes just in time for the new season trend for glossy, preened hair. It started with a wash using Shu Uemura products which was finished off with a cool rinse to lock-in shine. Unlike many neck-breaking hair washes, this salon has massaging chairs which lift your legs to alleviate pressure on the neck. Jason then set to work blow-drying. The technique is old school, blow drying small sections precisely and setting each section with the ceramic barrel brush and a cool shot from the hair dryer. Once Jason had finished, he told me to tip my head upside down; he then used a soft-bristled Mason Pearson brush to give the hair extra shine. A spritz of hairspray and I was done, and in a mere 30 minutes. Unfortunately it was raining when I came to leave, but Jason presented me with an umbrella, they have a stock pile at hand so clients who forget theirs don’t ruin their ‘dos.

On another note, the LA Science shampoo seems to have made a real difference to my hair, it definitely feels and looks longer (click here to read my initial hair growing blog). Unfortunately our ‘scientific’ measuring technique in which we measure it by tape has fallen short of our high expectations and my hair is actually measuring shorter than it was, it’s now 36 cm apparently. Don't be put off by our amateur test though, this shampoo really works – I swear my hair is growing much faster than normal.
