I’m having a bit of an obsession with lilac, but not any old lilac - deadened lilac. Sort of grey-purple, otherwise coined by me as ‘Grurple’. Catchy, right? No? Maybe it will catch on...

You see it all started when I was at my local nail salon at the weekend. I had to choose a polish and was surveying the wall of bottles in search of a colour that wasn't a classic nude or a typical summer coral. Purple and lilac usually repulses me (I have like a physical reaction to it) but lately I've been coming around to the offending colour - I even paid good money for a purple Kenzo sweater. Anyway, out of the corner of my eye I spotted this polish. It’s Essie St Lucia Lilac, £10.95, a fresh icy, creamy Grurple which is ideal for wearing now.

Come autumn if you want something deeper I’d try the slightly richer, darker Nails Inc Lowndes Square, £11, or Leighton Denny in Leading Lilac, also £11, (which is darker still and sludgier).
