Precisely one half of the ELLE beauty team have proper porcelain pale skin. This means we shake our heads vehemently at the suggestion of a spray tan, rely heavily on SPF 50 and tend to go a bit pink in this horrid cold weather. It’s not always easy being pale; but we thought we’d share our favourite skin-enhancing essentials to make it easy for you if you’re less than tan.

Rid yourself of redness by using Diroseal Treatment Cream, £20.70, by Avene: a saviour for the pink of cheek thanks to its calming thermal water ingredient.

While bronzer may be a no-no, highlighters get the nod for an ethereal look. Becca’s Shimmering Skin Perfector is perfect in Pearl or Opal, £32. A solid 50:50 ratio of highlighter to foundation gives you a proper glow – and don’t be scared, this won’t make you shimmer.

Speaking of foundation, the best colour is Bobbi Brown’s Porcelain shade – it’s about as pale as you can get without looking like you’ve been white-washed. Just choose your favourite formulation – we like the Foundation Stick, £26.

Since we’re steering clear of bronzer, we still need something to contour our cheeks – a combo of Powder Blush in Buff by MAC, £16.50, in the hollows, topped with a blended smudge of The Multiple in Luxor by NARS, £27 on cheekbones gives a contoured but pretty look.
