Nail art has been big news for seasons now, but the catwalks for spring/summer 2013 there was an explosion of intricate designs (not all suitable for DIY). But, the bright yellow tips at Jenni Kayne, the diagnail (yes, that’s a thing) - red, bias-cut, tips at Roland Mouret, and the new take on the French Manicure in monochrome at Marchesa, are all pretty do-able.

Rather than trialling the bright tips on a bare nail as seen at Naeem Kahn, I chose to paint on a base colour of white to really make my colourful tips really pop. I like the outcome, although taking inspiration from more than one show did make for somewhat of a Mondrian-esque feel, but I think it works. I had compliments from several colleagues, one telling me, ‘I never thought white would look good because it makes me think of tip-ex, but I love those!’

The opaque white is quite tricky to apply, any mistakes show up very easily, but I took care of them afterwards with a cotton bud dipped in nail varnish remover. Plus, I have extremely small hands and therefore teeny nails which means doing the Marchesa inspired black triangles (above) was quite tricky space wise- maybe I’ll save that just for my thumb next time.

I used the new Revlon Nail Art dual-ended polishes, £7.99 each, which have one normal sized brush and a thinner striping brush for nail art. A steady hand is key to this look, but I have to say the striping brush made drawing straight lines really quite easy. My favourite combination is the white and yellow which I’ll be applying to every nail next time – it’s the perfect colour combination for summer.
