My dvd viewing has become a nightly habit recently and last night was the turn of an old favourite, the brilliant Kevin Costner/Christian Slater-at-his-best vehicle Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. As I was watching it (for about the millionth time), it suddenly occurred to me what a timely piece of sartorial work it is.

Take Guy of Gisbourne. It would be easy to dismiss him as the greasy villainous side-kick to the Sheriff of Nottingham as I did. But hang on! Not only is he sporting a very fashion-forward dual texture hair style (check out Julien Macdonald and Max Mara SS10 shows), his riveted-leather get-up looks like something from Givenchy’s latest look book. It also struck me that Maid Marian’s hair is very Karl Lagerfeld AW09 – all voluminous frizz and wipsy texture – while her toffee-shaded eyelids would have been perfectly at home at Proenza Schouler last season. (See below for catwalk references but to make your own comparisons I suggest you check the film out for yourself).

The rest of the costumes deserve a mention, too – all deconstructed studded leather, thigh boots, draped knits and snoods, and that’s just the Merry Men.

All this has got me wondering which films you love for their beauty look – answers in the comments box below, please. Best one wins the chance to write a guest blog for us.

Robin Hood, style and beauty inspiration? Who knew.
