The best Brazilian in town

As a beauty editor, I love being proved wrong.

This happened to me last week when I visited waxing salon Strip (www.2strip.com). When it comes to waxing, I’ve often found that the quality of the treatment is inversely proportional to the luxury of the surroundings in which it is ministered, and, having thought I’d found the best wax in London in a fairly grimy basement in Bayswater, I was quick to dismiss ‘gimmicky’ Strip with its chocolate-scented wax and flocked wallpaper.

Last week, however, my regular wax got knocked from its number one spot on the treatment charts. The full leg, underarm and Brazilian wax I enjoyed at Strip was the best I’d ever had, and I’d urge anyone else to try it out.

I’ll spare you the step-by-step (she smoothed on wax and pulled it off; I was left without hair), but there are a few things that were note-worthy about the treatment:

Strip uses a particular brand of Australian wax called Lycon that I’ve never come across in other salons. I always thought the quality of the wax barely significant compared to the quality of the therapist, but this wax has convinced me it’s just as important. I was left with half the amount of usual redness and my skin felt softer and smoother for longer.

Crucially, it hurt a lot less, too. The therapist used a thin version of the Lycon wax with strips for my legs and a much thicker varietal for my underarms and Brazilian, which she simply called ‘hot wax’ and was peeled off. Thanks to the way the thick wax shrink-wrapped each hair, it pulls more on that than the skin, making this the least painful down-there depilation I’ve ever known. FYI: It’s the pulling on the skin, not the hair follicle, that’s half the pain of waxing, apparently, and you get that more with strips.

The therapists are all dedicated waxers and trained in the same method, so no need to wait for an appointment with the therapist you prefer as they all work in the same way, to the same standard.

And here’s another reason to trust the salon with your most precious parts: in June alone, Strip performed a whopping 982 Brazilians, which means when you’re lying in that undignified position, it’s reassuring to know they really have seen it all before.
