It’s official. Face painting is no longer just for kids.


First it was Drew Barrymore at a recent US festival sporting Red Indian-style stripes, then Bat for Lashes’ Natasha Kahn with rainbow-painted eyes at Glastonbury.


And on Wednesday night, Lily Allen was spotted out for dinner in Mayfair with silver Panda eyes.

General consensus on the ELLE beauty desk is that while we love this trend, we’re not sure when we’ll have occasion to embrace it. For example, despite being out to a swanky dinner in Mayfair myself last night, I couldn’t quite bring myself to follow where Lily had led the night before.

The occasion was me and my boyfriend celebrating seven years together and as I stood with my pot of Liquid Metal in Phenomena – a silver cream base that’s part of Illamasqua’s edgy Dystopia collection (out September) – in front of the work mirror, I had a revelation: best stick with my standard smoky eye if I want to make it to eight.

There are some trends that you just know men are never going to ‘get’ and perhaps you have to be Lily Allen to pull that kind of thing off
