Hot new hair accessories brand hits Liberty

A couple of years ago, I went on a work trip to New York and paid my first ever visit to fashion mecca Barneys.

I’ve never seen such well-edited, well-presented stock in a department store, ever. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven, which come to think of it must be how I managed to leave the store some $1000 poorer.

One of my best discoveries was a line of hair accessories by London College of Fashion graduate, Jennifer Ouellette. Silk ribbons and alice bands may sound twee, but the shapes (wide and flat in the case of the alice bands) and muted colours of the collection made them sexy not sickly. When I came back to England, I tried to track other Jennifer Ouellette accessories down, but to no avail. There was one children’s shop in the far flung reaches of SW-something with about three samples to choose from but that, as far I found out, was it.

In the meantime, I kept spotting celebs from Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan to Zooey Deshanel and Angelina Jolie sporting examples of the my new find. All state side, of course.

However, it was just a question of time before the UK cottoned on and I found out yesterday that Liberty have recently started stocking Ouellette. The spring/summer collection features lots of feathers and rosettes but for my money the plain, wide, flat silk headbands (for which Ouellette actually won a patent), are a classic.
