Another night, another gorgeous hair style from Marion Cotillard. At the Paris premiere of her new film Public Enemies last Thursday, the French actress was sporting a similar look to the square quiff/slick sides combo she’d showcased at the London premiere just days before.

Again, it was the strong, elegant simplicity of the style we loved. This time, her hair was swept back with trademark volume, giving way to a soft bulk of curls at the nape of her neck. The subtle side parting added a modern edge to an old-fashioned look, and stopped it becoming too helmet like.

To get the look, be generous with a volumising mousse, such as Volumactive Mousse, £17.20, by Kerastase. It will tame hair, add bulk and hold the curls. Once dry, sweep hair back with a side parting and start curling. Take a small section of hair at a time, spritz with extra-strong hair spray (Silvikrin do a good one in a pocket size, £1.30) and wrap round a small barrel tong for a few seconds, starting at ear-height (leave the roots straight). Once you’ve tonged the lot, brush through with a soft natural-bristle brush to break the curls and stop hair looking too stiff. A final spritz of hairspray will hold the style in place.

Swept-back styles invariably draw attention to your face, so no wonder Marion’s porcelain skin and burnished bronze eyes looked as show-stopping as her hair.

If you’re trying something similar for a summer event, wedding or party, follow her lead and keep skin fairly matte – it’s a great way to let gently smoking eyes like these stand out, and ‘soft’, flawless skin provides the perfect foil for structured hair.

Is this the most beautiful woman on the red carpet at the moment? We think so.
