There’s nothing like the twinkle of glitter to get me excited. While some might save it for Christmas trees, I fully embrace a smattering of sparkle to line my eyes or subtly highlight my cheekbones, whatever the time of year. It may seem a little at odds in a make-up bag bursting with state-of-the-art primers and hi-tech vibrating mascaras, but glitter can be gorgeous - you just have to know how to use it.

I buzzed Lesley Keane, Senior Make-up Artist at MAC to get her expert thoughts. ‘People tend to get scared off by glitter because they immediately think it’s theatrical and too dramatic, but used in a subtle, delicate way it can be worn for everyday’. For anyone who’s never dived in, Lesley suggests using a base colour with the same coloured glitter on top. ‘Apply a line of black liner along your lash line then press a fine brush into black glitter and trace over the top. It adds interest to an everyday look and creates a wet-look sheen that gives you impact without the dramatics’.

If you want to try colour then gold suits everyone and looks especially vibrant on blue eyes, ‘Pigment in Antiqued, £14.68 by MAC is a beautiful old gold that looks pretty pressed over lids on it’s own or layered over a soft brown shadow - a great way of doing of daytime glitter’ says Lesley.

To add sparkle to the rest of your face approach with caution and stick to small, fine particles with a pale colour finish as they give a subtler effect that’s easier to wear. Reflex Glitter, £12.72 by MAC is a shimmering pearl glitter that can be mixed with clear gloss to add iridescence to lips or simply pressed down the centre of your lids or cheekbones for dewiness. ‘If you do want to try full-on glitter, the chicest way to do it is to stick to one colour and one feature and embrace it!’ says Lesley.
