Calling all perfume lovers – Tom Ford is in town

Selfridges have been celebrating their Oxford Street store’s centenary with a series of events since last month but tomorrow evening’s is the one I’ve been most looking forward to.

Fashion designer-turned-perfumer Tom Ford will be signing bottles of the latest fragrance in his Private Blend collection Bois Morocain, which he designed exclusively for the store’s 100th birthday and will be unveiled tomorrow night. (Catch him at the Tom Ford counter between 5.30 and 6.30pm.)

The Private Blend collection was launched two years ago with 12 unisex fragrances. There are now 15 in the range – and true to Ford’s original spiel, they’re all special, distinctly uncommercial scents that are lots of fun to experience if you’re in to perfume. (Which, incidentally, is a lot more people than Tom Ford ever thought as Private Blend now accounts for 75 per cent of his fragrance sales, despite the fact they are more expensive and much less widely distributed than their more commercial counterparts. Tuscan Leather is ‘almost always’ sold out, according to my industry source.)

I had a preview of Bois Morocain a while ago and it’s one of my favourites so far –woody, salty and smoky without being sharp. It has a lovely warmth and softness, feels incredibly well-rounded, but is still intriguing enough to be an interesting, challenging scent. It’s delicious, basically, and worth a smell even if you don’t end up adding it to your collection.
