I was relying on some summer-of-’76 weather as my plans for an extended Mediterranean getaway are still just that – plans.

At least I can rely on the wave of relentlessly optimistic make-up that’s been launched for summer to get me in the mood. Sunshine palettes, shimmering bronzers, low-maintenance lipstick, bright lip glosses and even brighter nail polishes are like mini vacations every time I delve in to my make-up bag.

Here are a few of the ELLE beauty team’s favourites:

Guerlain Terracotta Princess Powder, £40. This covetable limited edition of the bronzing classic (one is sold every 25 seconds) is shot through with extra gold shimmer. Use anywhere you wish the sun would shine.

Essie Nail Polish in Funky Limelight, £8.95. ‘I’m still not over neon for nails so when I saw Essie’s latest limited range of eye-popping shades for summer, I pounced,’ says Beauty Assistant Georgia Collins. Funky Limelight is a bright, brash luminous yellow that looks fabulous on short nails and even better with a tan.  (N.B. Always finish neons with the shiniest top coat you can find – it brings them to life.)

Paul & Joe Blotting papers 2009, £10. The prettiest (and handiest) way to carry your shine-shifters this summer, these blotters visibly eliminate oiliness and come in a cute, feel-good dispenser case, complete with mirror. Essential for the tube and weddings.

L’Oreal Studio Secrets Lipstick in 842, £9. This pink-plum is matte but looks vibrant and modern set against a glowing, sun-kissed complexion. Dab some on your cheeks for a care-free flush, as well.

Jessica Custom Nail Colour in My Cabana Boy, £8.95. Holiday in a bottle.
