God knows how the 1,000 people questioned had such a working knowledge of the cities’ different styles, let alone the wherewithal to make such astute comparisons (perhaps they targeted people who continuously travel between these cities for work?), but the results did recall some other recently revealed ‘state of the nation’ findings.

It turns out Jessica Vartoughian, founder of global nail brand Jessica, doesn’t just know how to mix a great colour, she knows exactly which ones sell best and where. When I met her for breakfast recently to peruse the latest additions to her extensive 250 plus colour range (pictured above), this is what she told me about us Brits and our nail preferences:

Londoners love creamy finishes, and dark colours like purple and deep reds.

Frosted finishes win hands-down in Liverpool and Blackpool.

In Newcastle, bright pinks are strong at the moment.

Expect the biggest array of colour in Manchester, where women tend to be the most adventurous with colour and style. (They’re also the most eclectic when it comes to the way they dress, according to the survey.)

The French manicure still reigns supreme in the south-east.

While in Wales, classic red remains one of the most popular choices (and in Russia as well, fyi.)

Let me know what colours are popular in your neck of the woods.
