The right time to prime

Is primer really necessary? Every time I start to second-guess its value, a really great one comes along and makes me realise why I bother to apply the stuff – because it makes my make-up look so much better.

And last longer, too. Skin-wise, primer’s also brilliant if you’re prone to oiliness – it smoothes over those pores and prevents you looking greasy.

Some primers worth slipping on:

Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch, £21.05. This velvety primer fills in enlarged pores, so your skin looks smoother and prettier. It absorbs really quickly, too.

Prescriptives Flawless Face Primer, £18.60 (for stockists call 0870 034 2566). In the words of my editor, ‘this just works’. It makes make-up look more even and last all day – and the cool, soothing texture helps dry skin feel nourished.

Giorgio Armani Sheer Fluid, £28 (for stockists call 020 7318 2486). There are about ten different shades in the range but I love the warmer tones if you’ve got a slight tan. They give your face a gorgeous, golden glow without looking like you’ve OD-ed on bronzer.

Paul & Joe Protective Foundation Primer UV, £16. Ideal for post-winter complexions, this silky primer is tinted with a subtle gold shimmer, so pale skin is pumped with luminosity.

DuWop Prime Venom, £14.50. This matte lip primer smoothes fine lines, grips your lipstick, and plumps your lips. You almost don’t need lipstick after all that…

Blinc Lash Primer, £11. Like a little fat suit for your lashes, you can follow this so-quick-to-use primer with any mascara and your lashes will look deliciously chubby.

P.S. There’s a pot of the Clarins primer going FREE when you subscribe to this month’s issue of ELLE magazine.
