Today I fell in love; smack, bang, wallop.

Huddled backstage at Helmut Lang's A/W14 show. I listened to make-up artist Hannah Murray for Nars describe this season's look; 'burgundy, reddish brown eyes inspired by 90's shades' and (wait for it) 'pictures of Mars' (the planet not the chocolate bar). Brilliant.

I rushed straight back to my hotel room to give the look a whirl myself.

First up, a dewy-skin base. I applied Nars Tinted Moisturiser, £28, with an Original Beauty Blender Sponge, £16, and touched up imperfections (damn plane air con) with concealer followed by a slick of Nars Blusher in Orgasm, £21.50, on my cheekbones.

Hannah used a new Nars Lipstick in Deborah (out June) as eyeshadow. Back in my hotel room I improvised and blended two Nars Velvet Satin Lip Pencils in Hyde Park and Lodhi, £17.50 each, and applied with a Mac Blending Brush in 217, £18, in an almond shape.

Verdict? Lashings of black mascara would have changed it into more of a glamorous look but applying brown just at my lash roots made it more wearable (I'll never be a sans mascara convert). But I loved the rusty red shade - the perfect mix of sophisticated and cool.

The lipstick texture, once buffed in, was surprisingly long-wearing and is definitely a trick I'll be using a lot more now.
