We don’t know about you, but isn’t this January business Depressing (yes, that is with a capital D). But it doesn’t have to be that way, honest. Okay, yes, scientists did prove that the 6 January is the most miserable day (apparently our constant gloomy Tweets gave it away), but with that 24-hours of bleurgh behind us it’s time to think positive. Don’t let January get you down; rise above the gloom with team ELLE’s tips for being happy…

'My tip is donuts... There is nothing which isn't made better by having a donut,' Lorraine Candy, Editor-in-Chief.

'Get a pet. Or two. Anything small-ish and furry. Works for me anyway,' Anne Marie-Curtis, Fashion Director.

'Happy by Pharrell. Play it really really loud and dance around. Alternatively, even though I slightly hate the band and slightly hate myself for this as well (slightly might be an understatement), Dancing in the Moonlight by Toploader is one of those songs that just cheers people up. Or just laugh. Manically. That'll do it,' Natasha Pearlman, Deputy Editor.

'Cut yourself some slack. Tomorrow can be better. Elect to change your mood, it really does work. Do something nice for someone else,' Miette L.Johnson, Art Director.

'Nandos,' Joely Walker, Beauty Assistant.

'Looking at pictures of penguins makes you happy – I think that’s actually been proven by scientists. Sounds pretentious but going to good art/photo exhibitions makes me happy and really buzzy. That and eating vietnamese food,' Lucy Johnston, Online Picture Assistant.

'My bunnies! (pictured) And hot weather,' Molly Haylor, Fashion Assistant.

'The duvet. Everyday. ALL DAY and Vodka,' Jamie Spence, Picture Assistant.

'Champagne, swimming in the sea before breakfast, going to the airport ( except on the way home), getting off parking tickets, and my gorgeous daughter. But not in that order, of course…' Sue Ward Davies, Travel & Lifestyle Director.

'Being tickled or tickling my children. When my smallest says something funny (often inappropriate) to an adult – recent example at Christmas, Nanny why do you talk sooo much?' Kirtsy Dale, Executive Fashion Director.

'Animals – my dog always makes me happy, usually by doing something stupid or cute. Oh, and palm trees,' Lara Ferros, Picture Editor.

'The sun, beaches, the sea. The opposite to this sh!t drizzly grossness,' Gillian Brett, Editor in Chief's PA/Editorial Assistant.

'A bubble bath,' Amy Lawreson, Senior Beauty Writer.

'Animals. Yoga. Being outside. Preferably rolling around a Scottish hillside pissed with my mates. After hiking up it, obvs,' Fern Ross, Chief Sub Editor.

'Wine. Or any booze for that matter. (Sorry dryathaloners).' Rosie Bendandi, Bookings Editor.

'DANCING makes me happy!' Jules Kosciuczyk, Fashion Features Assistant.
