J.Crew has teamed up with perfumery Arquiste to create two new fragrances – a debut for the brand. However, it's not just its first encounter with fragrance that has excited us.

The new scents, No.31 and No.57, are inspired by an event – specifically, the first ever all-female modern art show by Peggy Guggenheim in 1943.

So, how do you bottle such an event?

No.31 – named after the event Exhibition By 31 Women – is inspired by the provocative perfumes worn by guests to the exhibition in the Forties, and includes bold notes of red vermouth and Bulgarian rose alongside damson plum, patchouli and oakmoss.

Meanwhile, No.57 – a unisex fragrance named after East 57th Street, where the exhibition was held – is far more woody and is inspired by the oak walls of the gallery, as well as Manhattan cocktails, negroni and gin and tonic.

We can't wait to smell the fragrances, which will be available to buy from 23 September at J.Crew's Regent Street and Sloane Square stores.
