We took five minutes to talk all things fragrance with Narciso Rodriguez at the launch of his latest perfume Narciso in Milan.

Do you think of perfume as an extension of a woman’s wardrobe?

Absolutely, its definitely one of the more glamorous accessories that you can have. The process of dressing for a man or a woman includes fragrance, for me personally its oil, and musk. I think fragrance is really a pleasure.

So you think it can bring an outfit to life?

Sure, I think when you make an impression and when you leave a room it’s sort of like a calling card that you leave behind.

How do you wear fragrance?

I love putting on oil and then spraying something else on [top]. I also like to mix, for instance, musk oil and water in my hands and just put a bit on the back of my neck.

Should you apply perfume before you get dressed or after you get dressed?

That’s a good question. I do it before I get dressed, because I like that it’s on my skin and becomes more about my skin rather than something that’s on clothing. I like to use a mist and put it in my hair too.

How do you think fragrance can change the way you are perceived?

I have a good friend who is really the ultimate ‘For Her’ woman, that’s her signature scent. Whether she’s going into a business meeting or a date, she has her protection on. I think people wear fragrances in different ways, sometimes we wear fragrance to repel people or entice people and bring them in a little closer. I prefer the latter.

‘For Her’ is such an iconic scent, why do you think that is?

I think it’s a very unique scent, not meaning to sound pretentious or arrogant. I find when I’m in a fragrance department so many tend to be the same. When I worked on ‘For Her’ at that time the trend was rose or gardenia and it was very, very strong. I wasn’t interested in following that trend, I wanted to do something unique and off the beaten track, and musk is something that you know and you love so well. It’s so comforting; it’s not a far-fetched proposal. I think just following that path; people really reacted and responded to something new and unusual.

Both Narciso and For Her are very addictive…

That’s great, addiction is a key factor in the inspiration for Narciso. I never tire of musk or the fragrances that I love and they all have an addictive quality to them.

Narciso, from £39 for 30ml is out now at Selfridges. If you want to layer like Narciso himself there is a Body Lotion, £30 and Narciso Musc Oil, £66 in the range, both available at Selfridges also.
