Sharks; they may not seem like the friendliest fish in the ocean but they’re vital members of the food chain; for a third year in-a-row Selfridges are showing their support to these deep-sea giants and can now guarantee that their beauty halls are 100% shark friendly (Squalene-free).

Why pick sharks? (Clearly they have never seen Finding Nemo). Well, they’re closer to beauty than you think. Squalene is the oil from shark’s liver and is used worldwide in beauty products such as creams, lotions and even lipglosses. And lots of it too – shockingly around 2000 tons of Squalene is used yearly, and it takes 3000 sharks do make one ton. Maths isn’t our forte, but that’s a shocking statistic.

Creme de la Mer is showing support with this beautifully embellished version of their cult lipbalm with Swarovski crystals (available 1 June, £60). Yes it’s pricy for a balm, but think about it as doing your part for the sharks whilst owning a collectable La Mer. Win, win.

We think it’s a brilliant cause. Good work Selfridges! (Although we’ll still shudder when the Jaw’s theme tune comes on TV...)
