While chatting backstage with Maybelline's head make-up artist Sharon Dowsett she lets us in on a little tale so sweet we had to share it.

A girl named Maybel fell in love with a local boy in 1915 but couldn't win his affection. So she had the genius idea to mix coal (from the local mine) and Vaseline which she applied to her lashes as, well, mascara. And with her new-found fluttery lashes she won the boy's heart.

Her older brother Tom Lyle Williams, a chemist, noticed what Maybel was up to and worked on recreating the product to sell. Lash-Brow-Ine, became a local hit, but the name wasn't working. William decided to combine Maybel's name with the product that helped her win the heart of the boy Vaseline to coin, you guessed it, Maybelline.

A true and lasting love story that worked out very well for all us Maybelline fans out there.
