As eery music wailed out in the backstage area of Somerset House, Val Garland was working up a "careful tribal" look that took Native Americans for its starting point - but resisted becoming too literal.

A sweeping, "aerodynamic" black swipe beneath the eye provided the statement. But the devil of this American Indian was in the textural detail.

A layer of white loose powder swept onto the cheeks provided a safety net to catch any falling black pigment. Garland then created the stripe in a velvet texture, layering MAC Black Black Chromagraphic and Feline Eye Pencils beneath Carbon Eye Shadow.

Balming the lip and patting Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream in the inner corner of the eye using a cotton bud, she added pops of high shine that played perfectly with the areas of powder.

A stretched, filled in brow and our Native Americans were ready for battle.
