At the Golden Globes in Los Angeles last night, two big make-up trends stood out – smoky eyes and statement lips.

The stars played around with these trends experimenting with varying takes on smoky eyes and bold lips. For us it means we have a whole load of party make-up inspiration!

Smoky Eyes

Homeland star Claire Danes’ make-up artist Matin Maulawizada, Global Artistry Director for Laura Mercier created a ‘sexy, fun look’ for the actress. ‘I decided to go with a smoky eye and not a red lip since the dress was so red’ said Maulawizada of the Versace gown.

Maulawizada used Laura Mercier Caviar Eye Liner in Black ‘to create depth and shape’ before applying Laura Mercier Tightline Cake Eye Liner in Black Ebony to ‘deepen the lash line’. He then used Laura Mercier Kohl Eye Pencil in Black Gold to ‘intensify the depth and to create a contrast with Claire’s blue eyes’. He finished the look with plenty of black mascara.

Jennifer Lopez’s smoky eye was created by make-up artist Mary Phillips using several colours from the L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Eye Shadow Quads. A soft grey was washed over the eye and a hint of black shadow on the outer corners. That pretty nude lipstick is L’Oreal Paris Colour Caresse Shine Satin in Eternally Nude.

Make-up artist Jillian Dempsey created Jennifer Lawrence’s simple, yet sultry make-up look. She layered up a warm blend of gold and coffee colours before lining the eyes with Chanel Automatic Liquid eyeliner in Black and multiple coats of L’Oreal Paris Telescopic Shocking Extensions Mascara in Blackest Black.

Other stars flaunting smoky eyes included: Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery, Katharine McPhee from the series Smash and Glee’s Lea Michele.

Statement Lips

Jessica Alba won the accolade for best make-up look of the night (well, according to team ELLE). Make-up artist Lauren Anderson took Alba’s peach Oscar de la Renta gown as inspiration for the pop of matte lipstick. ‘I loved the contrast between her glowing skin and the matte orange lip. It’s an almost tropical pop of colour that’s not an exact match for the dress but close.’ Anderson used Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Riviera, a bright velvety, tangerine shade. We love!

Another Jessica and another statement lip, this time Jessica Chastain whose make-up artist Kristofer Buckle was inspired by ‘watercolor as opposed to painting’. However Jessica wanted a bold lip to off-set the pastel hue of her gown. The deep berry pop of colour was L’Oréal Paris Colour Caresse Shine Stain in Berry Persistent.

Other stars working a statement lip included: models Miranda Kerr and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Salma Hayek and Isla Fisher.
