We spotted ex-EBT member Sophie Gridley today (she didn't go far, she now works on our subs desk) wearing a gorgeously dishevelled roll in her hair. We loved it so much we asked her to share how she achieved it.

My retro roll is a fake. Really. I have little more than a handful of hair and frankly that's not going to cut it when it comes to this 'do'. But I had my heart set on doing a look like this, so I invested in a straight doughnut (yes that's a thing, though I've ad-libbed the name). Mine's got a popper that turns it from hair doughnut (perfect for big chunky buns) into a sausage just the right length to stretch from ear to ear. And using it is as easy as pie, I promise. Make sure your hair's not too clean and slippy – day-old hair is perfect – and arrange the front into the parting you want, sorting out your fringe or sweeping your hair to the side. Place the sausage shape across so that it bisects your scalp, going from the top of one ear to the other. Then simply roll all your hair up and over. It's not a science or a precise process – I just tucked and pinned, tucked and pinned until all the ends of my hair were tucked down behind the sausage. Pull a couple of pieces from the very ends down and ruffle out – you don't want to look too wartime – and maybe add a pretty clip at the front. If you're a hairspray girl (I'm not) you might benefit from a spritz. Then head to work and lap up the compliments
