We thought our lipstick collections were out of control, but now we see we've still got a way to go. A one metre cube of solid red lipstick – Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture number one to be exact – has gone on show at the Palais de Tokyo gallery in Paris.

It weighs in at a back-breaking 330lb (that’s 23.5 stone, or 150kg) and was created by artist Fabrice Hyber. Hyber told WWD: ‘It’s a material that is very supple, lipstick, especially in a large quantity. The material permanently moves. It is a work that is never finished, which is always evolving. It’s a living oeuvre.’

So there you go: next time you wonder if you really need another tube of lipstick just remind yourself it's a living oeuvre and head to the tills with a clear and artistic conscience.
