Tracey Emin is launching a fragrance. Sort of. It’s a collaboration between the enigmatic artist, the London Serpentine galleries and Comme des Garçons, with Emin tasked with bottle and box design. You can see it, right?

The signature phrasing (‘”The Grass, The Trees, The Lake, And You”) sums the scent up nicely and nods to Tracey’s proclamational style.

We collared her for five minutes.

Where are you most inspired?

At the moment just by being in my house in France, with all the animals and nature.

How did the collaboration come about?

There was a conversation between Serpentine and Comme des Garçons, and Serpentine asked me to design the bottle and the box.

How did the fragrance inspire your artwork/words for the bottle and box?

I know the Serpentine Galleries, I know the park. I smelt the Serpentine and it smells very much like here. When they cut the grass here in the evening, that’s what it smells like – it’s amazing.

Did you draw on any other inspirations, other than the fragrance, for your artwork?

From a statue depicting a lovers embrace, and from unattainable love – not unrequited but unattainable. The difference being you can still love someone but you can’t consummate the love for whatever reason. For example you could love an angel but the angel might not be able to make love to you, but they might really love you.

Does perfume play a big part in your life?

I wear perfume every single day. Even when I don’t go out, I’ll get out of bed, shower and put perfume on. I don’t wear make up very often, when I’m working I don’t wear make up but I will always wear perfume. If I don’t have any on I don’t feel right, I don’t feel like me.

What is your first fragrance memory?

The first perfume I really liked was 4711, we used to travel to Turkey as a family when I was about 4 and we always used to have a big bottle of it in our car, so that’s a nice memory.

When is it out please?

April 28th and it’s £56.

Emin’s contribution was entirely charitable and all proceeds go straight to the Serpentine Galleries. If you like earthy scents we recommend you try this one for Summer.
