See Anne Hathaway get her hair cropped (and sing)

Anne Hathaway stepped out in April with a dramatically shorter hairstyle, the result of a cut she had for her part in the upcoming film adaptation of Les Miserables.

While most actors have their hair restyled for movie parts behind closed doors, Hathaway’s haircut is part of the storyline, and we can see the moment she loses her hair in the newly released trailer.

The trailer for the much talked-about silver-screen version of the popular musical (which has been seen by 60 million people in 42 countries and 21 languages around the world) went online on Wednesday. Along with Hathaway, the starry cast includes Amanda Seyfried, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter.

Hathaway’s character, French factory worker Fantine, is forced to sell her hair and become a prostitute to survive. In the trailer, not only do we see a snippet of the dramatic moment when a weeping Fantine has her hair shorn off, but we also hear the Hollywood star singing the song that propelled Susan Boyle to stardom, I Dreamed a Dream.

All the stars had to sing live on the set rather than miming to a playback of the song (the technique that is used in Glee). Director Tom Hooper (who won the Best Director Oscar for The King’s Speech) told USA Today, ‘If you are miming to a playback, even if the synchronisation is done very well, there is a part of you that knows something is off, something is false. When it's live, you believe it so much more.

'The actors have complete freedom rather than following a recording done three months before.'

On Hathaway’s version of I Dreamed a Dream Hooper said, ‘Anne has been an extraordinary exponent of singing live.

'Her I Dreamed a Dream is just jaw-dropping. It is so raw and heartfelt.’
