Red hair revelation

I was walking along Carnaby Street a few weeks ago minding my own and then bam! A lady with the most amazing red hair sauntered past me, unknowing of the effect she had just had. Red hair, all of a sudden had an allure. After a trip to Daniel Hersheson, where Claire Thorp coloured my bleach-fried tresses and George Northwood (who tends the locks of Alexa Chung and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) gave me a cut, it took me a full week to get used to my new hair. However the proof was in the pudding when I went to my friend's wedding this weekend and one of the other guests came up to me after dinner, pen and paper in hand, to find out what shade I had dyed my hair.

If you're not sure a change is what you want, don't rush into it. Book an appointment a few weeks in advance and mull it over.

Have a consultation. Take plenty of magazine cuttings of the colour you want; a few pictures of the blonde, brunette, red (delete as applicable) you like will give your colourist a good idea of the look you want. I took a cutting of the new Haagen Dazs print ad and a picture of model Julia Johansen proving inspiration can come from anywhere!

Be prepared to change your make-up, a new hair colour may require you to wear a bit more bronzer, different eyeshadows or lipstick.

Use a good quality shampoo and conditioner. Have a set for protecting colour and also another if your hair has other needs (for instance it's dry like mine) and alternate.

Heat styling will fade an all-over colour, especially if it's been applied over blonde hair, so always use a heat protector before tonging or straightening.

Hershesons offer prescription at-home Gloss Shines to keep your colour bold between visits. If you head to a different salon that doesn't offer this service, Superdrug Colour Effects will boost your colour nicely.
