In my new year’s quest to get running I have enlisted the help of Nike Master Trainer and super athlete Sonja Moses (pictured above). What Sonja doesn’t know about fitness is probably not worth knowing and as such I am putting my total faith the promise that with her guidance I will learn a good running technique and learn to enjoy exercise again. ? ?

Before we even begin with the exercise part Sonja insists on a goal planning session (the multi-talented Sonja is also a Life Coach). We discuss my current fitness routine (poor) and eating habits (previously poor but they have undergone a 2011 overhaul). After toying with vegetarianism last year I have, beginning this month, removed meat entirely from my diet. Sonja recommends nuts and eggs to replace the protein I will be missing out on and which is essential when exercising a lot. ? ?

We discuss what I would like to achieve in the next six months – what weight do I want to be? What dress size do I want to wear? How often do I want to be exercising? Sonja challenges me to write a letter dated six months from now and as if I have already achieved everything I have set out to do. What would I be wearing? What would the inside of my fridge look like now I am eating healthy? Sceptical at first I actually find the task really motivational. The key to success, according to Sonja, is to visualise myself having already achieved my goals. Following her advice I carry the letter with me in my purse for times when I need some encouragement. ? ?

So far it is doing the trick. I’m losing weight and actually find myself looking forward to my next workout. The hope of a healthier life and enthusiasm for exercise is the best motivation. ? ?

Next… Sonja and I hit the gym.
