The ELLE Fitness Blog: Post Five

Kat Webster, Picture Editor: Gymbox (various classes)

After last week's boy infested boxing class I decided it was time to take a more feminine approach to fitness - and what better way to shape up and shake up than with the Latin inspired dance class, ZUMBA!

Now, it pains me to admit it, but Shakira I am not. I have very little rhythm, gyrating my hips is about as alien to me as say, well, ironing! I just find it slightly cheesy in a look-at-sexy-me kinda way. However, all my misconceptions were about to change...

When the teacher arrived, a small Latino looking woman with big hips and a personality to match, her energy instantly infiltrated the studio. With little direction the music began and we all followed her lead and (without sounding cheesy) the beat.

The dynamic instructor infused powerful movements with sensuous rhythms, laughing, clapping and cheering the class along. At moments did I feel stupid? Yes. At moments did I feel un-sexy? Yes. But one thing is for sure - this is this most fun I’ve had in a long time working up a sweat and who knows – maybe, just maybe after a few more classes I too could be bootylicious!
