Make-up is meant to be fun, but with so many rules out there (you must choose smoky eyes or a bold lip and you should never wear red eyeshadow, among others) it can all become a bit dull and samey in life and on the red carpet.

So I was very pleasantly surprised when I saw not one but three celebs break the rules this weekend.

First up was Kirsten Dunst at the Tribeca Film Festival, who paired a bold orange lip with orange eyeshadow. To stop it looking too tango-tastic Kirtsen chose a deep, yet bright, lip shade and a softer more burnt-orange eyeshadow. A slick of black liner and a fresh pink cheek made the look more pretty-edgy, than matchy-matchy.

Next up, Chloe Sevigny stepped out on the red carpet at the Promises, Promises premiere on Broadway with a dark berry stain on her lips, which is more suited to an autumnal outing than a spring event. She paired this with kinky hair which looked as though she’d been sporting a ponytail all day and pulled it down just before the event. The kink actually makes her hair look darker at the bend, creating depth and shape around her face on a one-length hairstyle that would otherwise just hang, if left completely straight. Clever Chloe.

Finally, Scarlett Johansson looked stunning at the Iron Man 2 premiere. Her bouncy, honey coloured locks, subtle tan and glossy lips could have all blended into one for a pretty but all together uninspiring look. Luckily, Scar Jo’s make-up artist set to work on her brows with a pencil darker than would be advised for her colouring. The result? Bold brows that framed her face and added interest to her look. Madonna, eat your heart out.
