The no mascara look, it's often seen backstage but in real life we know that mascara is a wondrous face-transforming product. Val Garland gets that. At Roland Mouret she whipped out a white tube of lash conditioner - the cult Talika Lipocils Eyelash Conditioning Gel, £26 at Space NK.

Used on a small fan brush and gently slicked through curled lashes, this lash-boosting product adds a little definition without giving the full-on lash look of mascara. Garland also swears by this multi-tasking gel for separating clumped lashes when your mascara isn't playing ball.

How did Garland discover the product? An A-list actress wanted separated lashes for a premiere but didn't want to wear mascara, so Garland tried a few different products before settling on Talika.
