Time to fake it

By Susannah Edwards

Okay so it may still be chilly outside and yes, I’m still running about in Uggs and woolly jumpers, but as its now mid March (and the shops are full of pretty summer dresses) I’ve decided to ditch my winter wardrobe and head full steam ahead into spring - and that includes my beauty regime. Gone are the pasty legs I’ve been sporting of late and in comes a more golden-hued me. To help me achieve the perfect fake tan tan I called on expert, James Read for a one-to-one lesson. Here are his top tips...

Do prepare – to achieve optimum results preparation is key. Shaving, waxing and exfoliating should be done at least 24 hours before applying the tan.

Do moisturise beforehand – particularly dry areas such as hands, feet, elbows, wrists and knees will take to fake tan much quicker than other areas so moisturise well just before applying colour to minimise streaking and patchiness.

Don’t overdo it - SS10 is all about having a light healthy glow,

think warm caramel instead of deep bronze - Sublime Bronze Express Pro Fair Skin Mist, £12.99, by L'Oreal Paris offers the perfect golden glow.

Do wear gloves – nobody wants to look like they’ve faked it and orange palms are a big giveaway. Smooth product on using a protective mitt (we like Luxury Tanning Mitt, £3.50, by Xen-Tan) instead.

Do clean up – remember to clean your eyebrows, around your hairline and the nails on your hands and feet to avoid staining.

Do buff straight after – using your protective mitt pat off any excess around your hands, wrists and feet to avoid streaking and allow the tan to blend more evenly into your skin.
