Known best as a toned and tanned Californian bombshell, Cameron Diaz tends to pull off casual more easily than red carpet. But at the Oscars on Sunday hers was my favourite look of the night (courtesy of hair stylist Lona Vigi and make-up artist Robin Fredriksz), with big windswept curls teamed with a soft metallic eye and on-trend tomato lip (try Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fire & Ice, £7.29, by Revlon for a similar shade). The result? Dynasty meets old Hollywood glamour, all wrapped up in her ‘I haven’t tried too hard’ attitude.

She may have nailed it this year, but what about Oscars past?

In 2008, Cameron rested on her low-key laurels. The hair was artfully messy, teased back into a loose bun and with a free-falling side swept fringe, while her make-up was warm and peachy, with glossy skin and a soft smoky eye.

2007 was a different story. The make-up we can’t fault – great grey smoky eye and glossy nude lip – but a non-blonde Cameron? No thanks!

My personal pick of the bunch, though, was back in 2002, when Cameron sported a textured side pony teamed with a raspberry red lip (ELLE loves Lipstick in Plumful, £12.50, by Mac). I know it’s almost at odds with the Oscars’ uber-glamour ethos, but the actress looks as though she pulled her look together in the limo’s back seat en route and that’s what’s so great about her particular brand of beauty – it’s something we can all aspire to.
