When it comes to really good hair and make-up, I can think of few people who get it right every time. But the two people who do spring to mind are Kate Bosworth and Alexa Chung – both have very different looks, but both nail it time and time again. And the reason for their success? Simplicity. They both know what suits them and they stick to it. Never has this been better demonstrated than with these two shots, taken yesterday at New York fashion week.Want to get the look? Here's how...

Kate Bosworth

The look: A swept back messy bun offset with peachy and polished make-up. It doesn’t get much chicer than that.

The make-up: After applying your base, use a multi-purpose lip and cheek colour (try Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks in Cabo Coral, £16.50, by Bobbi Brown) to lightly dab across your lips and the apples of your cheeks, blending out towards your cheekbones.

The hair: Lightly spritz with a texturising spray (we love Surf Spray, £18, by Bumble and Bumble) and use your fingers to create a loose bun, allowing some strands to fall free. The messier this looks the better. Secure with grips (Boots, £1.19 for 30).

Alexa Chung

The look: Her super shiny and naturally tousled hair is sexed up with a deep smoky brown eye. Lips are left bare to give the look an ‘undone’ edge.

The make-up: Use a good eye primer (try Sin Eyeshadow Primer Potion, £11.50, by Urban Decay) to create a base for shadow. Then, using a loose powder eyeshadow (we love Pigment in Chocolate Brown, £15, by Mac), lightly blend around the eye extending up to the socket and underneath the eye. Line eyes with a black kohl liner (try Max Factor’s Kohl Eye Liner Pencil in Black, £4.49) and finish with mascara (High Lengths Mascara in Black, £14.50, by Clinique).

The hair: Lightly tong random sections of hair, allowing the curl to fall out into a wave. Fix with a shine-boosting hair spray such as Ice Shine Hairspray, £3.29, by Pantene.
