The scent is a representation of the designer's journeys from Cyprus to London and is called Airbourne, which was also the name of his autumn/winter 2007 collection (pictured).
The juice itself was produced by design duo and Dover Street Market owners Commes des Garcons, while Hussein came up with the concept and packaging design. The pair have been creating unusual fragrances since 1994; the most unconventional being the 'anti-perfume' Odeur 53, a blend of 53 bizarre notes including oxygen, flash of metal and nail polish.
Commes des Garcons' creative vision combined with Hussein Chalayan's innovative style means Team ELLE have high hopes for the fragrance. The notes in Airbourne are more traditional than some of those used by Commes des Garcons and include Tunisian neroli, lemon from Syracuse, bergamot, lentiscus from Cyprus, juniper berry, incense, musk and cedarwood. However, Hussein has added a twist, 'I proposed an imaginary scenario as to how these ingredients could incur change during and after an air journey from Mediterranean Cyprus to a London urban setting. These ingredients in an urban environment can become more electric or synthetic'.
