Malcolm Forbes, publisher of Forbes business magazine, then introduced Elizabeth Taylor to her new business venture, a perfume called Passion at a top secret press conference.
The scent became an overnight success and Elizabeth became the first star to have a popular celebrity fragrance. 'I think [perfume] is more than just an accessory for a woman. Its part of her aura. I wear it even when Im alone,' she once said of her perfume. Many believe the scent was so successful because of Elizabeth's passionate involvement from selecting the notes to having final say on the packaging. By 1991, the fragrance had made it onto the list of top ten selling fragrances of all time.
Of Passion, Elizabeth said. 'Passion is the ingredient in me that has made me who I am. Its my passion for life . . . my passion for passion that has made me never give up.'
She went on to launch plenty of successful, glamorous fragrances, distributed by Elizabeth Arden Inc, with White Diamonds introduced in 1991 being the most iconic and earning the title of 'the most successful celebrity fragrance of all time' (and it's still the best-selling celebrity fragrance today). In the book Perfumes: The Guide, Tania Sanchez wrote of White Diamonds 'Jennifer Lopez was still just a Fly Girl when ur-celebrity-fragrance-queen Elizabeth Taylor came out with White Diamonds, her second fragrance and her best...Soft woody floral - lush, creamy and sweet, with a tropical white-flowers accord, all bolstered by powdery musks...Seems designed to waft up from the cleavage'.
