Wavy hair was the biggest trend at the MTV Video Music Awards this weekend. But wearing the same hairstyle as your peer is almost as big a faux-pas as stepping out in the same dress, so each star wore waves their own way.
Katy Perry sported retro, 1940s-esque waves that juxtaposed her new mauve-pink hair perfectly. Katy and her colourist Rita Hazan have been working to achieve the singer's perfect hue for the past few months. 'It was such an exciting challenge to custom-create Katys colour for her big reveal at the VMAs, said Hazan. She is a colourists dream always willing to take risks to achieve a groundbreaking look and it was awesome to be able to realise this goal for her.'
Next up Adele went for a sixties bouffant hairstyle that required plenty of backcombing and heated rollers. 1960s, full-bodied hairstyles are big news for the new season and Adele perfectly tapped into the new trend. She played up the retro vibe with heavy black liner and a soft brown smokey eye. We love.
Katie Holmes opted for low-key but super luxe waves; she's not a singer, so we're guessing she didn't want to steal the show. The key to getting this look right is to part the hair and tong from the cheekbones down, making sure to leave the ends out; this technique will give you a really natural looking wave. Finish by using your fingers and a little volumising powder to massage subtle volume into the roots. Click here for ELLE's wavy hair how-to.
Beyonce looked glowing (obviously, given her news). To mirror the one shoulder Lanvin gown she wore on the red carpet she chose a side ponytail with a side fringe to soften the look. The ponytail was full of soft waves; to get the look follow our tips above for Katie's hairstyle and then pull into a side pony securing with an elastic.
